The Washington Capitals loaned top defensive prospect Alex Alexeyev.
The Washington Capitals have loaned another player to the KHL, their last hope is Alex Alexeyev. The team loaned Alexeyev to Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) with the expectation that the Capitals will recall him at the start of the 2020-21 training camp.
Alexeyev was selected in the first round in the 31st overall NHL Draft in 2018. The 20-year-old finished his first AHL season with 21 points (three goals, 18 assists) in 58 games for the Hershey Bears. He placed third among Hershey’s defensemen and 12th among all AHL rookie defensemen in points.
Moreover, Alexeyev’s 18 points evenly tied him to sixth among AHL rookie defensemen. He led the Hershey defenders in games played and was third over / under with eight.
Alexeyev’s AHL season has been cut short due to the novel coronavirus pandemic which canceled the remainder of the AHL season. It was a good rebounding season after his season ended the year before with an injury ending the season with the Red Deer Rebels.
Prior to the injury, Alexeyev had 43 points with 10 goals and 33 assists in 49 games in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He was eighth among defensemen in points per game with 0.88. In 135 career games with the Rebels, Alexeyev has registered 101 points with 21 goals and 80 assists.
In addition, Alexeyev represented the Russian team at the 2019 World Junior Championship, the 2016 U18 World Championship and the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial. At the 2019 World Juniors, Alexeyev scored six points with two goals and four assists in seven games.
Alexeyev getting sent to the KHL is a growing trend for prospects. With the coronavirus affecting AHL, the U21s need some ice time somehow and with the KHL season underway, this is a good opportunity for them.
In a normal year, that wouldn’t be a good thing. But with these times that we are living in right now, it is a perfect opportunity for the development of Alexeyev.

Prospects must all play for development, which is why Alexeyev was the last Capitals prospect to be loaned to the KHL. He’s loaned out there so he can have some play time and it will be fun to follow him.
