Hippodrome press release

The Hippodrome Theater is proud to present Lauren Gunderson’s The Revolutionist on stage as part of our 49th season, Back in the spotlight.

The revolutionaries
By Lauren Gunderson
Directed by Stephanie Lynge
April 29 – May 15; Previews on April 27 and 28

Four beautiful, badass women lose their minds in this irreverent female comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. When you put former Queen Marie Antoinette, assassin Charlotte Corday, playwright Olympe de Gouges, and Caribbean spy and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle in a room together, literally ANYTHING can happen.

This dark and sophisticated comedy dances on the edge of the guillotine between violence and heritage, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and elected sisters, and how we concretely change the world and the conscience of a society in upheaval.

It’s a true story. Or total fiction. Or a piece upon a piece. Or a loud resurrection… which ends with a song and a scaffold.

“THE REVOLUTIONISTS looks like a blindingly twinkling gem-like puzzle… By turns it’s hilariously funny and poignant, then back to satirical farce, then ending by highlighting the social commentary it’s been nurturing all night .” —FloridaTheaterOnStage.com.
