OUTSIDE SO BE SURE TO GRAB THE JACK JACKET CARDIGAN. OK, CLASS IS IN SESSION, BUT SET DOWN THE PENCILS AND GET READY FOR ROCK SCHOOL. ROCK IS THE MAIN STAGE FOR THE HAWKS AT THE OMAHA COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE. HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE PIECE BASED ON THE ICONIC FILM IS STEVEN SANDER. HE IS THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR. STEVEN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING. I’M HAPPY TO BE HERE. YES EXACTLY. SO THIS IS A PLOT THAT MANY OF US KNOW, BUT THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT MAY NOT KNOW. GIVE US A LITTLE REFRESHMENT. YES. SCHOOL OF ROCK THE MUSICAL IS BASED ON THE EARLY 2000 FILM STARRING, OF COURSE, JACK BLACK. YES. AND HE FOLLOWS DEWEY FINN, WHO IS KIND OF DOWN ON HIS LUCKY ROCK STAR. HE IS IN A GROUP. HE GETS EXTERMINATED. HE IS AT HOME WITH HIS ROOMMATE. HE ANSWERS THE PHONE. IT’S A CALL TO COME TO TEACH AS A REPLACEMENT IN A SCHOOL THAT THE ROOMMAT IS SUPPOSED TO DO WHEN HE DECIDES. WELL, I NEED A JOB. I WILL GO DO THIS. AND HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES OR MATHEMATICS, BUT HE CAN TEACH ROCK AND ROLL, AND HE DEVELOPED AN INCREDIBLE RELATIONSHIP WITH THESE STUDENTS THROUGH MUSIC AND THEY CONTINUE TO PERFORM AT THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS. YES. AND SO THIS SHOW HAS A LOT OF HEART, JUST LIKE THE MOVIE DOES. SO WHAT ARE SOME GREAT TO TAKE PEOPLE WITH AFTER THE SHOW THAT THEY CAN LEAVE WITH? WELL, REALLY, MY HOPE THAT THE FAMILIES WILL COME TO THE SHOW AND WE HAVE 14 CHILDREN IN THIS SHOW AND THEY DO THINGS THEY SING, DANCE AND EVEN PLAY ROCK AND ROLL INSTRUMENTS ON STAGE. SO IT IS REALLY MY HOPE THAT FAMILIES WILL COME AND IT WILL BE INSPIRED TO GO AND MAYBE TAKE AN INSTRUMENT OR TAKE AN ACTING CLASS OR OR TAKE A VOICE LESSON AND EXHIBIT AND GET INVOLVED IN THE ARTS. YOU SAID IT’S A FAIRLY NEW PIECE AND IS THIS THE FIRST TIME IT’S COMING TO OMAHA? YES, THIS IS THE AREA’S FIRST LOCAL PRODUCTION OF THE SCHOOL OF ROCK, NEW MUSIC, WRITTEN BY ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER. OF COURSE WE KNOW HIS AMAZING MUSIC IS LIKE JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, GHOST, GHOST OF THE OPERA. BUT THE SONGS FROM THE FILM ARE ALSO IN THE SCENE. OH OK. IT’S GOOD. SO PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO HEAR SOMETHING NEW, BUT ALSO HAVE THIS TYPE OF ICONIC FILM IN THEIR HEADS TOO. ABSOLUTELY. ALSO THERE. GOOD. WELL, FAMILY MUSIC. BUT ALSO, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIRECTING SHOWS WITH MOSTLY ADULTS VERSUS LIKE HAVING, AS YOU SAID, 14 KIDS IN THE CAST? YES. WELL, IT NEEDS MORE PATIENCE, BUT IT’S A LOT OF FUN. AND WHAT IS REALLY FUN ABOUT THIS SHOW, THE CHILDREN ARE ON STAGE FOR ABOUT 90% OF THE SHOW AND THEY WORK TOO HARD. SO IT HAS BEEN JUST AN INCREDIBLE REHEARSAL PROCESS AND THEY ARE REALLY MADE FOR ANY KIND OF THEIR THROW AND ASK THEM TO DO. AND SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE THE AMOUNT OF WORK WE ASK THEM TO DO ON THIS SHOW, IF WE ASK ADULTS TO DO IT, THEY WILL BE LIKE WE CAN’T DO THIS. BUT THE KIDS ARE SO DEPRESSED AND THEY ARE SO EXCITED AND THEY ARE SO READY. SO WOULD YOU SAY THIS IS MORE FOR ADULTS, IS MADE FOR CHILDREN. BIT OF BOTH. I THINK IT’S TOTALLY FAMILY MUSIC. I THINK PEOPLE WHO GROW UP WITH THE FILM WILL LOVE IT BECAUSE THEY WILL SEE THESE ICONIC MOMENTS AND JUST ICONIC LINES AND FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IT’S GREAT TO GO SEE YOURSELF ON STAGE OR SEE SOMEBODY LIKE YOU OR AROUND THE SAME AGE YOURSELF DOING AMAZING THINGS. SURPRISING. SO WHERE CAN WE GO? GET MORE INFO ABOUT THE SHOW AND GO TO OMAHA PLAYHOUSE DOT COM AND WE RUN FROM
