The public will have his first chance to experience Wilmington’s new Riverfront Park amphitheater on Sunday July 4.

The city announced the details of its Riverfront Park Grand Opening Celebration on his social media accounts Tuesday. The event, which runs from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 4, will feature music from four local groups, comedy, an outdoor café and activities for the kids.

The celebration is free and tickets are not required. On-street parking in metered spaces will be free, but city parking lots and Cape Fear Community College grounds will charge an event fee. Find details on WilmingtonNC.gov/juillet4th.

The groups selected for the event represent a wide range of sounds from Wilmington.

The first group to take the amphitheater stage will be the Omni Percussion Ensemble, which combines dance and percussion from a variety of African, Cuban, Middle Eastern and Brazilian traditions.

The Benny Hill Quartet (2:10 PM) is a jazz combo led by longtime Wilmington saxophonist Benny Hill. The Coastal Collective (3:20 p.m.), led by rapper Jared Sales, plays a mix of hip-hop and jazz.

Traffic light (4:30 p.m.) plays a very reggae rock. L-shaped bundle (5:40 p.m.), another veteran band from Port City, play a mix of country, bluegrass, folk and Americana.

The Wilmington comics, Matt White (2:50 p.m.) and Timmy Sherrill (4:00 p.m.) will also be performing. Sherrill is co-owner of the Dead Crow Comedy Club in Wilmington, which will soon reopen.

The event is sponsored by the Corning Credit Union and Cumulus Broadcasting.

The park and the amphitheater are currently under construction. The amphitheater, which will be managed for the city by Live Nation, can accommodate approximately 7,200 people.

The city also announced a fireworks display on July 4 in downtown Wilmington on Tuesday. The fireworks will begin at 9:05 pm and, according to the city’s Facebook event, “the best place to see the fireworks is along Water Street.”

The park and the amphitheater will be closed during the fireworks display.
