In 1937, a group of struggling artists, led by Robroy Farquhar, organized themselves under the name Vagabond Players. The Wanderers worked in various locations for three years, and in 1940 found themselves in the Blue Ridge area of western North Carolina. The local and tourist community welcomed them with open arms when they presented their first summer season of plays at a 150-year-old flourmill that they transformed into The Old Mill Playhouse in Highland Lake. With such success that summer, they returned in 1941. After WWII, the Vagabond Players reorganized, returned to the area, and opened a performance hall at nearby Lake Summit. The Lake Summit Playhouse flourished during the post-war years and soon the Vagabond Players were looking for a larger, permanent home. In 1952, the artist troupe and a newly formed board of directors made an offer to purchase 8 acres of land in the village of Flat Rock. This new home made the Vagabonds ‘locals’ and a rented marquee gave birth to Flat Rock Playhouse. As the beautiful region of West Carolina continued to grow, so did the Playhouse and in 1961, by statute from the North Carolina General Assembly, Flat Rock Playhouse was officially designated the State Theater. from North Carolina. What started as a few weeks of summer performances in 1940 is now a nine-month season of plays featuring Broadway musicals, comedy, drama, and theater for young audiences. The Playhouse’s dual mission of producing the performing arts and providing education in the performing arts includes a professional series; a summer and fall apprenticeship and college internship program; and Studio 52, year-round theater and film classes and workshops for kindergarten to adult students. Flat Rock Playhouse now welcomes over 105,000 customers per year and contributes significantly to the local economy and the arts in North Carolina.
