A Norfolk-based farm equipment manufacturer celebrates its 50th anniversary this month. Nicholson Machinery was founded in June 1972 by David Nicholson and for 50 years the company has been designing and manufacturing a range of harvesting and processing equipment.
Based in East Anglia, Nicholson remains a family business and has built quite an impressive reputation within the global agricultural industry. They now export around 65% of the products they manufacture.
David Nicholson founded the company alongside Sidney Cornwall, his former boss, after identifying an opportunity with local farms that lacked the technical support needed to repair farm equipment. In the 1960s and 1970s, farmers did not have the amount of equipment they have now, so as the agricultural industry grew, the repair side of Nicholson turned into manufacturing machinery.

Today, 50 years later, the Nicholson company employs 21 people, including family members and several staff members who have been with the company for more than 25 years.
Nicholson Machinery is best known for designing and manufacturing their Onion Top Tailer, which was their original product and remains the best top tailer today. Recognized as the market leader, the Nicholson Top Tailer is used worldwide by packers who need to maintain high standards for their customers.
Significant changes in the agricultural industry have occurred during the 50 years of Nicholson Machinery. An increase in the world’s population means that farmers now have to supply more produce than ever before. It has been predicted that by 2050, farmers around the world will need to increase their yields by more than 70% to ensure there is enough produce for demand. Nicholson continues to invest in research and development, developing innovative technology to support the ever-changing agricultural landscape.
Nicholson Machinery Founder, David Nicholson said: “I started the business from scratch and not knowing what the future holds, I am very proud that we are now exporting all over the world and that we be renowned specialists in the equipment we have developed over the years.
Purchasing Manager Nathan Nicholson said, “The invaluable knowledge and experience our father passed on to us has created a solid platform for us to take Nicholson Machinery into the future.”
Clare Nicholson, Finance Manager, added: “The past two years have been tough for everyone, as Nicholson Machinery turns 50, I couldn’t be more proud of each and every member of the team.”
