Coronado Playhouse (CPH) continues its 2021 season with âThe Comedy of Errors,â the free classic, airing online from Friday July 16 to August 8.
“The Comedy of Errors” is the 25th annual Free Classic production produced by the Playhouse. In 1997, under the direction of Keith A. Anderson, the Playhouse launched an annual festival of free classics, offering Shakespeare and other classics free to the public, thanks to a generous grant from the City of Coronado. This beloved tradition has been a staple of the Coronado Playhouse since its inception. Anderson brought a lot of talent, love and dedication to Coronado Playhouse, the San Diego Theater and beyond. He has done dozens of productions at CPH in addition to the debut of our Free Classic series. Coronado Playhouse joined the local theater community in mourning his passing earlier this year. The Playhouse is dedicating this year’s free classic to the memory of Keith A. Anderson.
“The comedy of errors” tells the grotesque misadventures of two pairs of identical twins. Egeon, a Syracusan merchant, had twin sons named Antipholus. When they were born, he bought another pair of newborn twins, both named Dromio, as servants. In a shipwreck, Egeon lost his wife, one of his sons and one of the Dromios. Egeon’s remaining son, Antipholus of Syracuse, and his servant, Dromio of Syracuse, later arrived in Ephesus, which, unbeknownst to them, is the home of their lost twins. New visitors are confused when local residents seem to know them. A series of wild misadventures based on mistaken identities lead to wacky and fantastic misunderstandings.
“The Comedy of Errors” is one of William Shakespeare’s first plays. It’s his shortest comedy and one of his wackiest comedies, with a lot of the humor coming from slapstick, mistaken identity, puns, and puns.
To comply with current COVID-19 protocols, this show will be recorded on stage and played to customers on demand for the duration of the show. Rehearsals and shoots also respect applicable protocols and restrictions.
Part of Coronado Playhouse’s mission is to give back to the community. For each show, Coronado Playhouse partners with a local non-profit organization to raise awareness and fundraise in support of their work. For the Free Classic, the Playhouse is focused on fundraising for itself, as ticket sales during the year only cover a portion of the annual expenses. In order to maintain the high standard audiences expect, CPH depends on donations to achieve its results. Please consider donating to Coronado Playhouse during this difficult time for the arts. Streaming of this production is free, thanks to a grant from the City of Coronado. The link to stream the show will be shared on Playhouse’s social media accounts as well as on coronadoplayhouse.org
