Dec. 27 — Pittsburg County Commissioners have issued a tender for a project that will add a concession stand, restrooms and storage area at the county fairgrounds.

The building’s floor plans include a lobby separating the concession stands from several washrooms and a room that can be expanded as needed between the amphitheater and the county fairground buildings near the McAlester Exhibition Center.

Officials said the building would provide more amenities at county field events while reducing pressure on exhibition center facilities.

“It’s the closest thing we could find that would suit everything and take some of the load off the big building,” Pittsburg County Commissioner Kevin Smith said.

A design for the approximately 2,520 square foot building includes a concession stand with two windows, an approximately 600 square foot lobby, water bottle fillers, two family toilets, 12 toilets and five urinals.

Officials said the facility would give event attendees narrower access to concessions and washrooms instead of having to walk across the grounds to use the exhibition center.

The toilet plans include changing tables for babies, ADA floor toilets and ADA accessible toilets. Roof plans require finished metal gutters, snow / ice guards, metal downpipes, metal ridge caps, reconditioned gable trim.

Sealed bids on the project will be received by the Pittsburg County Clerk’s office until 4 p.m. on Jan. 21 and will be opened at 10 a.m. on Jan. 24 in the Commissioners’ Conference Room.

Officials said the new building will allow the county to host larger events on the grounds of the exhibition center.

County commissioners resumed operations of the exhibition center earlier this year after terminating a 2001 contract with the town of McAlester that gave the town a 30-year lease on the building and some adjacent properties for a dollar.

The curators hired Shannon Stacey as Expo Facilities Manager in August and Krystal Bess as the new Exhibition Center Director in October.

Bess started in November and said she has booked a big three-day tattoo convention for April – along with other upcoming events.

“Just stay tuned for exciting things to come,” Bess said.

Bess said she hopes to announce more things happening at the exhibition center after the first of the year, including concerts, indoor sports and more. Meanwhile, the Expo Center will also host the Sam Wampler Freedom Ford Pro Rodeo, presented by Big V Feeds, scheduled for March 4-5, 2022.
