The Fortune 500 Europe, in its 2nd year, ranks the biggest European companies by revenue. In total, Fortune 500 Europe companies represent 57% of Europe’s GDP with $14.5 trillion in revenues, $1 trillion in profits, and $14 trillion in market value (as of 11 October 2024), and they employ 34 million people worldwide.

Europe’s largest company, Volkswagen is also the world’s biggest automobile manufacturer by revenue, though it falls behind Japanese giant Toyota by car volume and Tesla for market capitalization. Its eponymous brand is one of 10 in the group, alongside the Czech Republic’s SKODA, Spain’s SEAT and Cupra, Italy’s Lamborghini and motorbike maker Ducati, Britain’s Bentley and fellow German brands Audi and Porsche. The fractious Porsche-Piëch family has been connected with Volkswagen since patriarch Ferdinand Porsche designed the latter’s famous Beetle, and has controlled the group since the late 2000s. It is headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Shell celebrates its birthday on April 23rd, the anniversary of the 1907 merger between the U.K.’s Shell Transport and Trading Company and the Netherlands’ Royal Dutch. Since then it has consistently been among Europe’s, and the world’s, largest companies. Like most energy majors, Shell is highly diversified, including oil and gas exploration and extraction, refining and petrochemicals (lubricants and specialist fuels for example), pipelines and petrol forecourts, and energy trading. It also has a growing portfolio of renewable and low-carbon energy assets, including electric vehicle charging points. Shell’s big long-term push, however, has been from oil to gas, including liquefied natural gas. Through 2021-2023, this division has accounted for between a third and more than half of the group’s earnings. Shell has been headquartered in London since 2022, but retains substantial corporate functions in The Hague, reflecting its long history in the Netherlands.

France’s largest firm rebranded from Total to TotalEnergies in 2021 in reflection of its ongoing diversification from oil into gas and renewables. Its commitment to the latter is notable among traditional energy firms, with an installed capacity of 22 GW of renewable electricity generation at the end of 2023, and a target to reach 35 GW by 2025 and 100 GW by 2030. For context, the installed capacity of the whole of the U.K. is currently just under 58 GW. Total is headquartered in Paris, but employs around 100,000 workers in over 120 countries, with a focus on Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Swiss mining, energy and trading company Glencore has its fingers in many commodity pies—over 60, in fact, with operations in over 35 countries. As a miner, the most significant are copper (worth $18.1 billion in 2023), Zinc ($12.6 billion) and coal ($16.5 billion), though the company also covers gold, silver, cobalt, nickel and aluminum, alongside oil refinery. Glencore doesn’t just produce commodities in enormous quantities; its marketing and trading division, which leans more heavily towards oil, is even larger. The idea is that doing both makes it quicker to adjust to changes in global supply and demand, though it also spreads the risk from the commodities cycle. Glencore is based in Baar, Switzerland, with mining operations mainly in Australia, South America and South Africa.

The trading name British Petroleum was originally devised by a German firm to market its products in the U.K. The Anglo-Persian Oil Company, from which modern-day BP descends, bought the name after the British government seized it in the First World War. The energy major survived Iran’s oil nationalization in the 1950s, later merging with several large U.S. businesses including oil firm Amoco and gas station chain ARCO. Surviving costly setbacks from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the loss of its 20% stake in Russia’s Rosneft after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, BP is now navigating the energy transition. The London-headquartered firm has been relatively aggressive at pivoting away from oil production to lower carbon activities, predominantly retail sales, oil refinery and trading, natural gas and lubricants (under the brand Castrol), although it also has a growing renewables portfolio.

Stellantis is a truly transatlantic automotive business, forming from the 2021 merger of U.S.-Italian Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles and France’s PSA Group. Its 14-strong portfolio includes legacy European brands Citroën, Peugeot, Opel, Vauxhall and Maserati, alongside American names like Dodge and Jeep®. The Amsterdam-headquartered group describes itself as transitioning into a sustainable mobility tech company, with a long-term emphasis on autonomous and electric vehicles. To that end, Stellantis is investing in battery gigafactories, bought a 21% stake in Chinese EV-maker Zhejiang Leapmotors in 2023, and launched pan-European long-term rental and fleet management business Leasys, and Free2move, a global car sharing, subscription, rental and parking provider.

Companies are ranked by total revenues for their latest available respective fiscal years. All companies on the list must publish financial data and report part or all of their figures to a government agency. Figures are as reported, and comparisons are with the prior year’s figures as originally reported for that year. Fortune does not restate the prior year’s figures for changes in accounting.

Overview

Revenue figures include consolidated subsidiaries and reported revenues from discontinued operations, but exclude excise taxes. For banks, revenue is the sum of gross interest income and gross noninterest income. For insurance companies, revenue includes premium and annuity income, investment income, realized capital gains or losses, and other income, but excludes deposits.

Profits are shown after taxes, extraordinary credits or charges, cumulative effects of accounting changes, and noncontrolling (minority) interests, but before preferred dividends. Figures in parentheses indicate a loss. Profit declines of more than 100% reflect swings from 2022 profits to 2023 losses. Profits for partnerships and cooperatives are reported but are not comparable with those of the other companies on the list because they are not taxed on a comparable basis. Profits for mutual insurance companies are based on statutory accounting. Revenue and profit figures for non-U.S. companies have been converted to U.S. dollars at the average exchange rate during each company’s fiscal year (ended Dec. 31, 2023, unless otherwise noted).
