G500 2022-05-Sinopec

Sinopec, China’s second-largest oil company, earned a spot on the Global 500 for the 24th consecutive year with revenue of $401.3 billion and profits of $8.3 billion, as demand for gas returned to pre-pandemic levels. Its 2021 revenue haul left it just short of its pre-pandemic 2019 total of $407 billion. Soaring crude oil prices, which rose nearly 70% in 2021, and booming demand for natural gas—up 13% as measured by cubic feet—buoyed Sinopec’s results. As it raced to meet the world’s need for energy, state-owned Sinopec allocated 27% more to operating expenses in 2021 compared with the year prior, as the company spent freely to secure more crude oil and identify potential new drilling locations.

Total revenue for the world’s biggest companies fell 4.8% to $31.7 trillion this year—the first decline in half a decade.

China’s state-owned petroleum and chemical giant dropped three places on this year’s Global 500 ranking, following a rough year of reduced demand during the pandemic. But Sinopec is predicting a return to profit in the first half of 2021, issuing guidance for $5.6 billion of net income, compared with a $3.54 billion loss for the same period last year. Surging demand from factories and freight, plus higher oil prices, has helped drive Sinopec’s business. Looking to a carbon-neutral future, Sinopec is putting more focus on hydrogen production. The oil and gas giant aims to produce 500,000 tonnes of “green” hydrogen by 2025 and plans to build 1,000 hydrogen-refueling stations across the country in the same time frame.

China’s state-owned petroleum and chemical giant held steady at No. 2 in this year's ranking, even as its profits fell 16.2% to $6.8 billion. Sinopec bet big on expanding production capacity last year just as oil prices grew volatile, and 2020 has been even bumpier. China's lockdown measures to counter the coronavirus pandemic clobbered energy demand as industrial activity paused. The result was a record quarterly loss in the first quarter for Sinopec, and cuts to capital spending. However, there were signs of a swift recovery: by April, the company said daily sales had returned to 90% of their pre-lockdown levels.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues.
